What is the Food & Cuisine Like in Mozambique?

Mozambique cuisine is influenced by centuries of Portuguese colonization. Maize, millet and sorghum are staple diets in Mozambique and are grown in the country.

Maize and cassava are both made into porridge. Stews and soups are popular dinner dishes, as well as meat and fish, including shellfish like shrimps and prawns. ‘Piri Piri is a hot pepper sauce or marinade and is used in meat and fish dishes.

What can I buy when shopping in Mozambique?

The Mozambique currency is the Metical (Mts). Full new meticais pricing has been introduced, so be careful when settling prices. Please note that many businesses in the tourist centres are run by South Africans and prices may be quoted in South African Rand (ZAR).

US Dollars, British Pounds and Euros can be converted at any bank or exchange. Other currencies are not accepted anywhere, even at official banks and exchanges. Meticais cannot be exchanged outside of Mozambique or buy anything with meticais outside of Mozambique.

You will find ATM’s in all towns, and accept all major credit cards. Please note than many businesses will not accept the older USD, only the latest series.
