This island, with its beautiful tropical beaches and extensive coral reefs lies about 40 km by boat east of Maputo. From there it is possible to visit nearby Portuguese Island, Xefina and Santa Maria point. A large part of Inhaca has been designated a wildlife protection area and the island has been a centre of scientific research for many years.

The university marine research station and museum, south of Inhaca village, offers clean, basic accommodation. The wildlife in the area includes such species as loggerhead turtles and birds such as hammerkops, pelicans and flamingos.

Other attractions of the island include the maritime museum and a historic lighthouse. Excellent opportunities exist for snorkelling and diving, favourite 'spots' are the reefs at Santa Maria, and off the Lighthouse. The island is a popular daytrip escape from the capital Maputo. Lucas Restaurant on the island is a Mozambican institution and is recommended for their seafood (they are also prepared to cook ones' catch). The restaurant is located in the village next to the market.

When to go:

April to September the cooler, drier months. Annual rainfall ranges from 400 - 800 mm, falling mainly November to March. December is the wettest month while August is usually completely dry. Averages temperatures are around 30 C (85F) and it's very humid. August to October are windy months on the island and thus it is not recommended to visit at this time of year.
