The largest island in the group is Bazaruto island, filled with fresh water lakes inhabited by crocodiles and many species of birds. The island itself is home to some 125 different species of birds.

To the south of Bazaruto lies Benguerra island. The smallest and most northerly of the islands, Saint Carolina, is comprised mainly of rock and coral.

Bazarruto Archipelago consists of Five Islands: Bazaruto, Magaruque, Santa Carolina, Benguera (Benguerra) and Bangue. The islands are covered by large sand dunes and freshwater lakes, which are nesting grounds for black-winged flamingoes. There are numerous opportunities for bird watching and viewing wildlife from the fresh water lakes to the sand dunes, or to the grasslands and swamps, viewing possibilities abound.
