Very early in history, Benguerra Island was named “Santa Antonio” by Portuguese explorers and then later renamed “Benguerra” after a local Tribal chief. The island is an average of 11km in length and 5,5km in width. The island is only 14km offshore from the mainland and the town of Vilanculos.
